For months my co-workers had been raving about this famous Houston institution. The kept on telling me “Go have some breakfast there…they even have tasty healthier options”. Well, after having that lovely ragu at Laurenzo’s and those sinfully fatty Tacos de Chicharron at La Mexicana, I figured that a healthy breakfast, or meal altogether, was long overdue. It was a hot spring but really summer like morning. I slipped into my jeans, put on my wife beater and onward I walked to Baby Barnaby’s.

The menu is eclectic, offering from a southern style grits and all breakfast, to smoked salmon, pancakes, waffles and green eggs! The healthier options are Bob’s Healthy Plate and Anne’s Healthy, High Protein Burrito. I ordered Bob’s, and a bowl of granola with fresh berries and skim milk.

The bowl of granola was delicious. The berries on top were plump and fresh. Although they do not make their own granola, they offer a tasty commercial brand. Making your own granola can be a tedious, trial & error job – besides this is Texas not California. Next time I am going to ask if they have honey, I do like granola with a light drizzle of it. It compliments the oats and seeds well, and sort of mends their favors into a tasty mélange of goodness.

My main breakfast course was perfect! I love egg whites, but I tend to stay away from ordering them because they are often overcooked. These were perfect! Fluffy, moist, lightly salted. They were a cloud of fluffy goodness. The fruit cup had both Cantaloupe and Honeydew melon balls, grapes and fresh berries. The chicken apple sausage was nicely charred, salty, juicy and scrumptious. It comes along with multigrain toast that goes well with some of the blackberry jam that sits atop the tables.

That my friends is how they make their orange juice! Make sure to order yourself a glass of it.

I love this place! The vibe is so welcoming, the people watching is fun and the food is amazing! I have already returned two different times and I can’t wait to try their mother restaurant Barnaby’s for lunch!
